So as you all know I love to support local and started a segment where we could share, learn and inspire! It is so important to support local and share your findings with others.

During lock down, we are going to do a whole lot of these to highlight these businesses – many of which are taking HUGE strain during this time – and shed some awareness and love to all.

I discovered the most divine local business selling leather goodies for your little ones as well as items of clothing from baby grows, to beanies, and jumpers and grow with me pajamas (first I’ve heard of these!) and they all look comfy and so beautifully made. And leather bowtie sets for daddy and baby! So cute! They also sell lovely fleece blankies to keep your little ones warm. And let’s not forget about Mom, she needs one of their beautiful kimonos!

We chatted to the lovely Andrea from Bloss Designs and she had this to say!

Please tell us a little about your business and your products?

We are a small business that make leather baby items and selected clothing items. All the prints on our fabric are unique and designed by myself. We strive to make your little one as comfortable as possible in the most beautiful way!

You opened your own business  –  How does it feel to be a business owner that loves what they do?

I must say I never would have thought that I would one day be a business owner, but I could also never imagine myself in just one job.

What I love about my business is that it enables me to practice and explore all the many different passions and interests I have, while still being at home with my kids.

What are the top 3 learnings you have had to find out the hard way since starting your own business?

First, admin is not my strongest suit so it was a challenge to get a system that works for me. I had one or two incidents where I spent more than what came in because I became confused with the comings and goings. So definitely make sure that you stay on top of your admin even if it means doing a little bit every day.

Secondly, not everyone is your friend. I never expected the baby industry to be so cut-throat. I have come across some really amazing ladies in the process but l have also been done in by some that looked like they wanted to help and then stole my ideas. I won’t necessarily tell people to be skeptical of everyone that wants to help but be certain before trusting people too much with things that are unique to your business.

Lastly, if you are dealing with clients directly make sure to stay in contact with them every step of the way. You can do everything right for a client ten times and then slip up once and they won’t use you again. Keep your side clean and treat your clients the way you would love to be treated.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?

In 5 years I will hopefully have agents representing my brand and have our items sold in some multi-brand baby boutiques. These are still only stepping stones towards the long term vision to become an international brand in the future.

What is your advice to individuals out there wanting to start their own businesses but are too scared?

If you are scared to start your own thing, I would say remove as much of the financial risk as possible and then just jump in and try it. I think finances is probably the reason most people don’t want to start their own thing. In my business I had to put some money in to get our first samples going but from there we only produced as the clients paid, this helped a lot in the beginning when things were very quiet because even though I wasn’t making money, I wasn’t losing it either.

Tell us 2 things that are the BEST part about owning your own business and make it all worth while?

Owning my own business has made it possible for me to have a career and still be part of my kids every day lives. It is quite a juggle sometimes but I get to have them with me and raise them  according to our values in their formative years and that means so much.

But I think the most important past of owning my business has been the journey it has taken me on with my relationship with God. I have so many testimonies of His supernatural provision and faithfulness. It really wasn’t easy for us financially when I started the business and in some ways it didn’t make sense either. But we knew this is what God wanted me to do and walking in that obedience and learning a deeper sense of trust in Him has made all the difference in my life.

How has lock down affected you?

I expected to be more effected than we were but we were counted as an essential service from very early on stage which was a blessing. But I think the most frustrating part is not being able to sell items that are now out of stock because our suppliers are shipping in from overseas which has been a challenge. But it has forced us to develop new products, which has been great.
