So as you all know I love to support local and started a segment where we could share, learn and inspire!
During lock down, we are going to do a whole lot of these to highlight these businesses – many of which are taking HUGE strain during this time – and shed some awareness and love to all.
So I would like to introduce to you to a BRAND NEW business, set up in the time of lock down and WOW, you are going to love it! How are these gorgeous items made for your little loved ones? Wooden personalized chairs, tables, lights with names on them – so divine!
Their OTHER business is a wedding hiring business which as you will know is taking strain during current times. Check out their website for Happinest Hire here! Such beautiful items to hire for weddings – makes you want to plan your wedding or event now!
Let’s see what Erin had to say about their new business, Bunny + Hutch!
You have just started a brand new business – Tell us about it and what products you will be selling and creating?
My hubby and I have always loved working together and designing/creating/building unique and fun things! We wanted to start this business three years ago, but we just didn’t have the time or the resources. Due to our wedding hiring business being put on hold until COVID clears, we decided to utilise our existing workshop and tools normally used to build wedding décor and put them to good use on this new venture.
We are going to be building customised, high quality, modern kiddies furniture and décor. We are going to keep up with trends when it comes to design, and we will also be ensuring that all our products are of the highest standards and our collections will include chairs, tables and loads of other #DADMADE items. Starting this business means that we can keep on all of our full time staff over this quiet period caused by COVID, and it also allows us some creative freedom and direction, which is also so important! We think kids are going to love it, and the moms and dads are probably going to love it even more.
What are the top 3 learnings you have had to find out the hard way since starting your own businesses?
Bunny + Hutch is still brand new, so I’m sure there is a lot still to learn about this industry which is new to us! But what we have learnt from our last four years of owning our wedding hiring business is that HARD WORK PAYS OFF. This is so true – we worked so hard to get where we are. It is disheartening to see it all put on hold due to the current circumstance, but we did it before and we can do it again. So I think determination is essential to starting your own business.
Another nugget of advice I got from my accountant which has been proven to us – sometimes the best way to stay competitive isn’t having newer or cooler stuff than your competitor, but to have lower overheads, or even the lowest possible overheads. This is something we have applied to all of our businesses and it has proven to be our saving grace, especially over the last two months.
Where do you see your businesses in 5 years? Once we have gotten over the effects of the lock down.
We would love to see Bunny + Hutch grow and thrive! In five years time, we hope that we will have our own dedicated workshop just for kiddies furniture, and to have a full team dedicated to making our items. Our main focus right now is selling online and shipping nationally, but if we could also ship internationally that would be amazing! We would also love to have an upmarket retail space in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town some time in the future if growth allows.
What is your advice to individuals out there wanting to start their own businesses but are too scared?
If you don’t try, you will never know – and if you get it right, you won’t regret it. The best thing you can do is think outside the box about what you have INSIDE your box. For example, our circumstance has changed drastically – but kiddies furniture is something we are able to do with our existing resources, even though it is very different to our usual day-to-day business!
Tell us 2 things that are the BEST part about owning your own business and make it all worth while?
The flexibility and lifestyle far outweighs the stress of owning your own business, but this is different for everyone For us, we get to work together as a couple and spend a lot of time with our kids because we determine our own schedule. That to me, is the best part about owning your own business. Another thing is that your potential is limitless when you work for yourself – you can grow and your earning potential can grow, too. It might take a little hustle, but you can get there!
