We chatted to the lovely Este Franz , Co-Founder of Creative Cables South Africa, based in Cape Town and she had this to say to us!
What are the top 3 learnings you have had to find out the hard way taking a European business and opening an arm within the South Africa market?
To be honest the only difficult thing about the whole setting up of the South African branch was remembering where I put my boarding pass when we went to Italy to go look at the Creative-Cables factory where all the cables are manufactured. It has been such a smooth process actually. Probably the most “difficult part” was deciding where to open our first store!
Where do you see the Creative Cables South Africa business in 5 years?
In 5 years I see ourselves as the “go-to” for custom lighting for South Africans. In the next few months you will see shop corners in Stellenbosch, Pretoria & Johannesburg. Exciting times!
How has the lock down/ Covid situation affected your business? Has there been a positive up swing in sales due to more focus on home DIY and decor due to us all working from home?
Covid came just 5 months after we opened our flagship store which was a super uncertain & stressful time. We had to make quick decisions on where we were headed to keep the business open & trading. We decided to move from Stellenbosch to The Woodstock Exchange in Cape Town. We had to move the whole family too which was not an easy feat!
In June last year we moved the whole shop & a house, 3 kids & 2 dogs! We were in the correct mind frame to act quick rather than wallow in the worlds unfortunate situation!
We believe in positive thinking & energy and so far we have gone from strength to strength.
The Woodstock area suits our colourful & arty personalities so everything just works.
We have become easily accessible to interior designers & decorators who don’t need to travel to Stellies to view our products anymore.
Tell us 2 things that make Creative Cables the best lighting brand to work with as a customer!
Where do I begin? Our clients (lighting designers, procurement agencies etc) and the general walk in customer can create a lamp, lighting feature, pendant or outdoor lighting to their own taste & specifications. We revamp your old lighting too!
The sky is really the limit for your creativity using Creative-Cables components.
Our big draw card is that you can choose the length, colour & style of your fabric cables. Nothing is set in stone & you become the designer of your own lighting. Many people think its expensive to do but they will be surprised that we offer affordable, Italian-quality lighting & then we add some good, fast & friendly South African service to put the cherry on top!
What inspires/ drives you to get up, get dressed and take on the day?
My husband, Rudi & I own the business & its the best decision we could have made to open Creative-Cables SA in South Africa. One day is not the same as the next, we get to help people pick colours & sketch out dream lighting installations & I couldn’t think of a more exciting way to work & I love every single minute!
We are just blessed to be able to offer such a unique service & product to the South African public. With our ” Be Creative “ motto we urge everyone who decides to upgrade their lighting or for new builds to realize how important it is to add their own personality to their spaces.
