So as you all know I love to support local and started a segment where we could share, learn and inspire! It is so important to support local and share your findings with others.

During lock down, we are going to do a whole lot of these to highlight these businesses – many of which are taking HUGE strain during this time – and shed some awareness and love to all.

Another gorgeous local business to support is Fearika Design. They produce the most stunning table decor and stationery, as well as ceramics and adult famous South African artist colouring in books ( think Irma Stern, my absolute favourite – read more here) that you will fall in love with! Such stunning items for your home, and you will be spoiled for choice as there are many patterns and colours to choose from for the table decor and stationery. Please support local!

Check out their website for more information and please follow them on Instagram and Facebook, they would appreciate the love!

We chatted to the lovely Fearika about this beautiful brand.

Tell us a little bit about your business.

FearikaDesign offers a large range of paper products. Our most popular product is the Different Doilies range – round paper placemats in a variety of trendy designs. Matching coasters and cutlery bags to decorate a beautiful table are available in some designs. Furthermore we have a large range of stationery like greeting cards, small gift tags, calendars, guestbooks and notebooks in different formats. We also published four truly South African colouring in books.

You opened your own business – How does it feel to be a business owner that loves what they do?

For years I worked as a freelance graphic designer for other clients. Since I started selling my own designs and supplying to shops, I enjoyed the fact that I can earn while being busy with something else.

What are the top 3 learnings you have had to find out the hard way since starting your own business?

– Cashflow must be watched. It can be problematic to design and print new products if you have too much old stock left.

– To be on huge online platforms like Take a Lot and Amazon did not work for me. You end up on the last page of a certain category and nobody notices your products. It cost a lot more to feature on the first pages – I did not realise that initially.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?

I would like expand my product range and to see sales escalate via my website and other exclusive online platforms.

What is your advice to individuals out there wanting to start their own businesses but are too scared?

Make sure that your main product line is unique with not too much competition on the market.

Only start a business if you have a financial plan which can work, ask for assistance if this is not your strong point.

Tell us 2 things that are the BEST part about owning your own business and make it all worth while?

– To manage my own time is the best, there are a lot of disadvantages about working from home, but the advantages outweigh them by far.

– I love being the boss ánd the tea lady. I like to make the most important decisions but on the other hand enjoy to serve the tea to the staff and to spoil them sometimes.

How has lock down affected you?

The business was largely affected, sales almost completely stopped. I spent a lot of time developing new ideas but this does not pay the bills.
