During this crazy COVID time, businesses are taking HUGE strain so it is important to showcase and share local finds – and this is a special one!
When I discovered this incredible #girlboss, I just knew I had to share as she is such an inspiration!
Frei Design, owned by Liandri Fouché is a branding and creative studio specialising in graphic design, marketing and illustration based in Joburg but servicing clients globally.
There are two sides to Frei Design – 1) services such as graphic design (and the most beautiful and creative logos) and brand development, packaging design etc, and 2) product offering like the most gorgeous prints you have ever seen, and you can buy fabric or wallpaper designed by Frei Design, through Fabric Bank, in their local ZAR selection – fabrics here and wallpaper here!
Liandri is the most talented artist, and I love that she shares her prints at such affordable pricing so that we can all have a piece of her talent in our homes. I have one of her prints at my desk and it always makes me so happy when I look at it.
Tell us about your business please.
I have been free-ing brands into the world since 2007, and believe in the power of colour and intricate detail in my work.
Frei offers freshly-made branding packages for start-ups and new businesses looking to establish themselves, as well as re-make packages for existing businesses, looking to overhaul and nurture their brands.
My hand-made offering focuses on illustrated work, developed into various product ranges and custom commission work for corporates and individuals.
Whenever I have a quiet moment, I find myself with pen in hand, dreaming away line-by-line, into a field of flowers or perhaps a bird wanting to break free.
I believe that good design is there to set our spirits free. I have expressed a strong love for bold pattern, texture and colour from an early age.
My more recent business journey is delving deeper into the world of surface pattern design, which I aim to grow with a bang, come 2021.
How does it feel to be a successful #girlboss that inspires others and loves what she does?
Gosh – overwhelming at times, stressful and busy!
Although generally a very organised and structured person, my thoughts are everywhere! If I see something beautiful that inspires me, I want to make it or create it.
If I see a business in need, especially when it comes to their corporate image, and how they portray themselves into the world, I want to help them be their best.
Sometimes the feedback you receive from the general public and how they perceive your brand, gives you goose bumps!
It is a special place to be at, knowing you have found your calling. I guess the best words to sum it all up would be; empowering and enabling.
What are the top 3 learnings you have had to find out the hard way since starting your own business?
1. In business things normally do not turn out as planned. That’s OK. Embrace whichever direction it does turn.
2. Cut yourself some slack; the strive to perfection in every aspect of your business will kill you. Just put it out there. Just go live already, and grow as you go.
3. When the going gets tough, the will gets tougher.
Being a Solopreneur, everything is at stake. If one area of your life is out of balance, everything cascades out of balance, since you’re the one having to keep it all together.
Take good care of your mental and physical health.
What is your advice to women out there wanting to start their own businesses but are too scared?
You are the only person who can give yourself permission to make the move! When I left my Corporate job everyone around me backed my decision.
It was not until I granted myself the permission, that I could take the action. It’s a scary place to be, but if you feel it in your bones – go for it, you will never regret it.
Be prepared to work a lot, work very hard and be committed. Business is a constant, not a when-you-feel-like-it kinda thing.
The best time is NOW.
If you’re worried about being ready – six months or one year will not make you more prepared for the journey. You have to learn as you go.
If you worry about finance and funding, you will learn to survive with how ever much you have.
It is very important to be able to answer these three questions;
– What business do you want?
– Why do you want it?
– How will you be different from others?
Tell us 2 things that are the BEST part about owning your own business and make it all worthwhile?
I have complete control over my time and decision-making. If I work until 11pm tonight, I am able to start after 10am tomorrow if I wish.
I don’t have to report to anyone or ask anyone’s permission to just GO with it. I absolutely hate that!
If I mess up, I bear the consequences – and that’s OK!
