So as you all know I love to support local and started a segment where we could share, learn and inspire! It is so important to support local and share your findings with others.
During lock down, we are going to do a whole lot of these to highlight these businesses – many of which are taking HUGE strain during this time – and shed some awareness and love to all.
I came across the lovely Heart Thoughts on Instagram and I just knew I had to share! Their clothing is so stunning – beautiful fabrics and divine designs – and their kiddies books look amazing. So support local and check out their website for more info!
We chatted to the very special Jessica, the heart and soul behind Heart Thoughts and she had this to say to us! As you can see, she is very passionate about her business and has a heart of gold.
You opened your own business – How does it feel to be a successful business owner that inspires others and loves what they do?
There is no greater feeling than to watch, what you feel has always been meant for you, unfold in your life.
Passion projects are fulfilling and purpose filled and I am extremely passionate about mine.
Through Heart Thoughts, all my hopes, dreams and desires are laid out before everyone and it’s truly a beautiful form of vulnerability.
I love those who get my intentions and who support and show love to my brand.
You tell me I’m good enough and I really hope that my brand provides you with that same sunshine feeling in your soul. It means the world to me and more and I mean that from the bottom of my heart.
What are the top 3 learnings you have had to find out the hard way since starting your own business?
You cannot please everyone, so as long as your intentions are always to do so, move forward. Running a small business is really tough and we are all human at the end of the day. We are often so used to factory run services and can always expect fast and perfect outcomes, where as, with Heart Thoughts in particular, it’s my seamstress and I against the world! We are strong and passionate and pretty particular about our service and quality, so when things don’t go our way, a little patience and understanding is always so appreciated.
We are usually on time and everything runs smoothly, but when there is an odd issue, we seldom get a groan or a grumble and I love our Heart Thoughters for that. Your vibe attracts your tribe and I see that now!
It costs nothing to be kind. The second thing, is trying to price your items realistically is a really tough thing to learn how to do, so that your effort and hard work also gets rewarded at the end of the day.
We want fast fashion at low prices, but the difference we make by paying more and supporting small and local businesses, out ways any satisfaction from the quick buys. Thank you, to all my loyal customers! The third would be to always put heart into everything you do. People always need love and your kindness can make all the difference that day. Going the extra mile for someone is always worth every bit.
Where do you see your business in 5 years? Once we have gotten over the effects of the lock down.
I have always been a big dreamer, so don’t get all “that’s not realistic” on me now, but in 5 years time I hope that we are making enough money to support me and my seamstress (right now, my seamstress is only getting paid) and that we can afford to have someone else helping her. I hope we can have a really big and full catalogue and maybe even get into a few physical boutiques here and there. Maybe it’s a big goal, but Heart Thoughts was a wild dream too, and look where we are!
What is your advice to individuals out there wanting to start their own businesses but are too scared?
What is the worst that could happen? Go for it. Do your research and if you’re passionate about it, then dive in and believe in it. People follow passionate and personal journeys. Never stop dreaming, but make sure, at some point, you start doing. You owe that to yourself.
Tell us 2 things that are the BEST part about owning your own business and make it all worth while?
I am a people pleaser and while that sometimes leaves me disappointed, it very often brings me all the joy in the world. When I know that someone is proud of me and my brand, or believes in what I do, and when I get a message to say how much they love their Heart Thoughts purchase, it absolutely colours my world! If you have something nice to say, S A Y I T. It means more than you may know!
How has lock down affected you and your team?
The level 5 lockdown was a time where no money came in and I felt very helpless and worried, as did all of us in that situation, but I am a very positive and hopeful person and I always know that no worry adds a moment to our lives or fixes anything that is beyond our control (I wish I could tell myself this when I’m in that space, because we all go there at times), but… at the end of the day… Faith over fear every time, for me.
