So as you all know I love to support local and started a #girlboss segment where we could share, learn and inspire!
During lock down, we are going to do a whole lot of these to highlight these businesses – many of which are taking HUGE strain during this time – and shed some awareness and love to all.
So I would like to introduce to you the most amazingly creative women who are behind Land of Lark and what they had to say! The first time I saw their products was at a Kamers Market in Pretoria and I have followed them on social media ever since!
Kirsty & Cindy – thank you for sharing your business, your lives and your inspiration with us.
You started your own business – How does it feel to be a successful #girlboss that inspires others and loves what she does?
Being #girlbosses is empowering and constantly challenging. There is nothing more satisfying than using our unique skills to solve everyday problems in a functional and beautiful way through our designs. As a team of two we feel that we are able to push each other creatively, keep motivated and inspire one other, which only adds to our strength and drive. If we can inspire others, then that’s a bonus too!
What are the top 3 learnings you have had to find out the hard way since starting your own business?
As an entrepreneur you never stop learning and it is so difficult to only pin point three main lessons but here goes…
Firstly, we have learnt that being agile within the business is extremely important. By allowing organic growth and being adaptive to our environmental and economic conditions, we have been able to be flexible, changing where and how we need to quickly, be it through marketing, manufacturing, product type or point of sale.
Secondly, there is no such thing as an overnight success. Building a brand takes time, consistency and hard work in order to achieve credibility and customer loyalty. Not everyone will love you or even understand your brand instantly. Be happy to take criticism and learn from it.
Lastly create, create and create. Never stop making, reading and learning from others, You are going to fail, but when you do, fail hard and fail fast so that you can learn and move on to the next innovative idea. Be focused, don’t stray from your end goal or vision. Its so easy to be side tracked, but stay true to your brand and you will get there!
Where do you see your business in 5 years? Once we have gotten over the effects of the lock down.
We have always aimed to be an honest, proudly South African brand that specialises in the local design and manufacture of innovative, relevant and unique children’s products that improve the lives of modern families. In five years we hope to be a recognised and trusted household product design brand that families have come to know and love. One that encourages learning, play, imagination, material awareness and comfort.
What is your advice to women out there wanting to start their own businesses but are too scared?
Don’t let fear of the unknown hold you back.
Opportunities present themselves when you least expect them. Do your research, make sure you have a unique product and selling proposition, understand your target market and current economic conditions. Have a sales strategy. Don’t spend time making things perfect (nothing is perfect), test and change as you go, be adaptable and flexible.
When you can’t find the answer to something just ask, reach out to other entrepreneurs, talk to us! You can do this girl!
Tell us 2 things that are the BEST part about owning your own business and make it all worth while?
We find so much joy in the creation of something from concept to final product and we absolutely love seeing our products in use. Getting great feedback and rave reviews fuels our creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. We also enjoy having a flexible schedule and being able to be more present in our families lives on a day to day basis.
