So as you all know I love to support local and started a segment where we could share, learn and inspire! It is so important to support local and share your findings with others.

During lock down, we are going to do a whole lot of these to highlight these businesses – many of which are taking HUGE strain during this time – and shed some awareness and love to all.

Today we are sharing an artisanal Ice Cream / lolly producer and brand with you! Las Paletas produce their ice cream and lollies in Cape Town and supply deli’s, do home deliveries as well as cater for weddings and parties and corporate events.

Please support this local business by ordering your summer favourite lollies for home – they come in a variety of fruity flavours and if you are looking for sugar free, they have those too! Ice cream in tubs is also available.

Please see their website for more! And follow them on Instagram and Facebook to know more about what is happening.

We chatted to Jason, founder of Las Paletas and he had this to say to us!

Tell us a little bit about your business.

Las Paletas was started in 2012 by creating a few lollies at home for a dinner party in our Kitchen. All our lollies and Ice Cream tubs are made with natural ingredients – hence we just use real fruit / dairy and chocolate. This is what makes us different and suitable for the whole family.

What are the top 3 learnings you have had to find out the hard way since starting your own business?

  • You and your partner need to trust each other but most of all trust what you are doing.
  • Have complete faith in your product, doing this will help you speak with authority and conviction.
  • Have a great sales system, so that you know what you spoke to that client about 3 months ago.
  • Start your business with a suitable accounting package, FNB has a small business package that works perfectly for a small / medium business with little accounting experience.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?

For Las Paletas to have a few actual stores and not just to sell into various shops and Deli’s across Cape Town. We would also like to expand our service offering to JHB and to have a Las Paletas office there.

What is your advice to individuals out there wanting to start their own businesses but are too scared?

Take a leap of faith. Never doubt what you are doing and don’t have a backup plan. There is no space for failure.
Have a great sales system as I promise you, you will not remember what you spoke to that client about in 3 months time when you catch up with them again.

Tell us 2 things that are the BEST part about owning your own business and make it all worth while?

Time, I personally don’t believe in working 8 – 5.

Rather put in your effort when you are at work, if you focus on work when you are at work you will have all the time you need.

Take time for yourself, walk on the beach and reflect on the past day and how you can improve tomorrow.

The rewards by seeing clients / customers smile when they eat your product, actually it’s when they come back with friends and say, you they have to try this.

How has lock down affected you and your business?

Our sales are down 75%, they are slowly increasing now due to the lockdown being lowered, however everyone is still nervous out there for corporate events and weddings. We have had to adapt to managing our cash flow very well.
