So as you all know I love to support local and started a #girlboss segment where we could share, learn and inspire!

During lock down, we are going to do a whole lot of these to highlight these businesses – many of which are taking HUGE strain during this time – and shed some awareness and love to all.

Have you EVER seen anything more divine looking than these cakes (and macarons, cake pops, cupcakes – everything!) in your life? LionHeart is a Cape Town based maker of stunning baked goodies – so incredibly talented and WOW, I could scroll through their website for ever, drooling. Every piece is made with love, and all look like magnificent works of art. AND they even have vegan goodies!

We chatted to #girlboss Nikki Albertyn, the Owner and Creative Director of LionHeart, and this is what she had to say!

You started your own business – How does it feel to be a successful #girlboss that inspires others and loves what she does?

Being your own boss and creator of jobs is one of the most incredible feelings. It’s often scary reflecting on your responsibilities towards your team, your community, yourself even – but you have those there to support you along the way too!

What are the top 3 learnings you have had to find out the hard way since starting your own business?

You need to wear all the hats – get to know the basics about everything, yes, even accounting. I pride myself in the fact that I have a basic understanding of most things but dealing with finances never came naturally and I had to teach myself to enjoy it
When appropriate, do what is expected and not what you want to.
TAKE. A. BREAK. Burn-out currys no flavour!

Where do you see your business in 5 years? Once we have gotten over the effects of the lock down.

I see a diverse business with cake at it’s core and a team of bad ass womxn leading the way. We are hugely focused on being fluid and moving with the times, from trends to the way we do business. I see us coming out of this situation so much stronger and smarter with our values (personal and business) solidified in a way that will drive us for years to come.

What is your advice to women out there wanting to start their own businesses but are too scared?

If you have nothing to lose JUST DO IT. Make sure that you always have a back-up plan and don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Be prepared to constantly innovate and DIVERSIFY. I cannot stress this enough.

Tell us 2 things that are the BEST part about owning your own business and make it all worth while?

My team, I have so much love for those girls, and being able to get my hands on great cake almost any minute of the day hehe.
