So as you all know I love to support local and started a segment where we could share, learn and inspire! It is so important to support local and share your findings with others.

During lock down, we are going to do a whole lot of these to highlight these businesses – many of which are taking HUGE strain during this time – and shed some awareness and love to all.

We chatted to the lovely Bridget Richardson, founder of Love Letters Stationery and she had this to say to us!

Tell us a little bit about your business.

Love Letters designs and produces an exclusive collection of purposeful, personalised stationery, lifestyle gifts and stylish essentials for you and your home. All our products are imaginative, original, excellent quality, and just plain gorgeous and are aimed at the individually-minded customer who wants something special and not mass-produced. We focus on efficient service and good communication with our customers, who have placed a lot of trust in us by ordering a product they haven’t seen from someone they don’t know. We recognise this, and take pride in the personal relationships we form with our customers.

Love Letters began life as a single set of gift cards for a good friend a couple of years ago. While hunting for a very special personal gift, it became clear there was a gap in the market for bespoke stationery and original paper products that have a personal touch. Our range has expanded a bit since then but our goal continues to be to create and produce products that are fun and original to the South African market.  Most of our products are packed, cut, punched, wrapped, strung and stuck by the very small team here at Love Letters HQ, so you know the product you get is handcrafted with love.

What are the top 3 learnings you have had to find out the hard way since starting your own business?

Relationships on every side of the business are critical – suppliers, employees and customers, so treat people well!
Don’t take no for an answer – there is always a way, surround yourself with people who share that view.
The gift industry is seasonal – when it feels plentiful around Christmas, remember winter is coming!

Where do you see your business in 5 years? Once we have gotten over the effects of COVID.

I really don’t know – I absolutely love where we are and what we do – I have no intention of taking on the world, we produce beautiful, good quality, affordable, and original gifts and that is our key strength. If we can continue doing that, I am happy.

What is your advice to individuals out there wanting to start their own businesses but are too scared?

We have been in business for over 10 years. When I started out, we were the only online Personalised Stationery business in SA, and many people told me that South Africans would not shop online, and that the stationery trend would last – and yet here we are.

So my advice is to go with your gut, and don’t dilly dally – just get on with it. Start something – don’t over analyse, don’t discuss endlessly with anyone who will listen – just get started.

Tell us about PENCILS-4-PENCILS?

Pencils-4-Pencils is a Love Letters Stationery initiative that aims to purchase basic stationery sets for under-privileged children. Many families and schools in our country do not have the funds to purchase the basic stationery items a child needs to participate in lessons. We hope that our wonderful customers will join us in this initiative and add a small donation to their carts now and again.

Love Letters also donate from our profits to this organisation. This money will go to a programme run by Miss Earth South Africa which as a social enterprise, supports many projects to uplift people around South Africa, including supplying as many as 10 000 disadvantaged learners with basic stationery every year.
