So as you all know I love to support local and started a segment where we could share, learn and inspire! It is so important to support local and share your findings with others.
During lock down, we are going to do a whole lot of these to highlight these businesses – many of which are taking HUGE strain during this time – and shed some awareness and love to all.
I discovered this awesome brand at the Field Market in Sandton and just had to share them with you! I think their earrings are just divine! Please can I introduce you to Made By Makoti. The earrings are made using beautiful African prints and are unique and hand made with love. The colourful fabrics used are bright and bold and they are such statement pieces. Please support this local business!
Check out their Instagram page for more! We chatted to the lovely Alison Kutywayo about her business and she had this to say to us!
Tell us a little bit about your business.
At Made by Makoti we make and sell African print earrings. It’s a small company, that started in 2018. I love the bright and vibrant colours of African print fabric and was inspired to make some earrings!
What are the top 3 learnings you have had to find out the hard way since starting your own business?
Make what you love – that passion helps sell things as well as advertise! I wear a different pair of my earrings at almost every opportunity!
You have got to be brave and confident when selling your product
Don’t take it personally – not everyone will be keen on your produce or happy to purchase them at the price you have suggested – if its selling, stick to your price and your product!
Where do you see your business in 5 years? Once we have gotten over the effects of the lock down.
I see myself stocking my earrings are more outlets across the country, to give more people the chance to see my work
What is your advice to individuals out there wanting to start their own businesses but are too scared?
Do it! Start now!
Start small
Talk to friends, relatives, your target population etc to get an idea of what is needed, what people like, how much people would pay etc – this all helps as you think things through
Be open to change and adaptations
Tell us 2 things that are the BEST part about owning your own business and make it all worthwhile?
I get to make what a love!
It is a creative outlet that also makes money!
I enjoy seeing people wearing earrings Made by Makoti – that is a real joy!
How has lock down affected you, your business and your team?
It has slowed sales due to cancellation of markets where I typically sell as well as reduced the foot traffic at the other outlets where my earrings are stocked. Also, earrings are a more luxury item, not a need, and therefore, with wallets strapped for cash, this is not a priority purchase.
