So as you all know I love to support local and started a segment where we could share, learn and inspire! It is so important to support local and share your findings with others.
During lock down, we are going to do a whole lot of these to highlight these businesses – many of which are taking HUGE strain during this time – and shed some awareness and love to all.
Oooooh! This is an exciting little business that I just had to share! I mean who doesn’t love a little glitter to brighten up your life?! Malachite Eco Glitter produces glitter made from plant cellulose – which means it is then sustainable and biodegradable!
So many colours – you will be spoilt for choice! You can use this glitter on your body, to decorate cakes and cookies and on clothing – the options are endless.
Please support this lovely local Cape Town business and follow them on Instagram and Facebook – they would appreciate the love <3
We chatted to best friends Michelle & Christina from Malachite Eco Glitter and they had this to say to us!
Tell us a little bit about your business.
We are 2 best friends that always wanted to have a side hustle together, we came across an opportunity to bring in Eco Glitter into SA. We realized quickly that there was a gap in the market for this product and thus we created Malachite Eco Glitter.
It is an exciting product because it made from plant cellulose making it sustainable and versatile!
It’s been really exciting as our customers have ranged from pastry chefs, make up artists, jewelry designers, mothers of small kids, general festival goers and craft enthusiasts all using Malachite Eco Glitter in unique ways.
This is has been a great creative outlet for us both when we are not doing our full time corporate retail jobs!
In a year and a half we have really grown Malachite Eco Glitter. Our latest milestone is that we are now stocked in The Ultimate Summer Pop Up store located in the V&A waterfront along with some other brands that we are inspired by!
What are the top 3 learnings you have had to find out the hard way since starting your own business?
No matter the size of your business never forget that it is in fact a business, and end goal is to make money (keep growing the business) so don’t let people not pay you! People will often ask for freebies and although sometimes this can bring amazing ROI to your business but it’s important to remember your worth and have a marketing strategy in place that allows for the “freebies”.
Squeeze the most out of your idea! There are so many avenues to explore and you can end up expanding your business into something you never initially planned to. For example we thought we would target festival goers or events, however after doing markets and selling on social media we came to see our customer is varied and it’s opened up many avenues for us!
You have to make it happen! Since this is a side hustle for us it’s important that we schedule time to “meet” and dedicate our focus to Malachite.
Where do you see your business in 5 years? Once we have gotten over the effects of the lock down.
Hopefully to become our full time income/job and where we can employ others and expand the brand and our offering.
What is your advice to individuals out there wanting to start their own businesses but are too scared?
Start small but just start! Even if you just test the idea out to your close circle of friends and family – you’ll grow in confidence and your idea. Talk about it, and believe in yourself and your idea.
