So as you all know I love to support local and started a segment where we could share, learn and inspire! It is so important to support local and share your findings with others.

During lock down, we are going to do a whole lot of these to highlight these businesses – many of which are taking HUGE strain during this time – and shed some awareness and love to all.

Today I am sharing a lovely local brand with you! Michessie is a proudly South African business that makes the most beautiful bags. The material is hand painted – every piece is original – and then sewn into a bag. No two bags artwork is the same! Handmade with love, this is a business to support. Check out her website here to do some online shopping! And please show some love and follow Michessie on Instagram and Facebook.

We chatted to Michelle about her business and she had this to say!

Tell us a little bit about your bags?

The range is across hand bags, tote bags and fold over clutches. The bags are all original art and therefore one of a kind. No two are ever the same. They begin as paintings which are then creatively sewn into different styles. The bags are lined and may be hand washed with care and dried out of direct sunlight. They should not be put in a washing machine or drier.

How does it feel to be a business owner that inspires others and loves what they do?

I don’t feel like a business owner, rather someone who has a business as a result of doing what I love. I would like to think it inspires other “creatives” to share their talent.

What are the top 3 learnings you have had to find out the hard way since starting your own business?

Mistakes are expensive!

Decision making can be daunting when you are on your own.

Maintaining self-belief hits highs and lows … and rock bottom.

Where do you see your business in 5 years? Once we have gotten over the effects of the lock down.

Continuing to thrive I hope; creating art and statement art bags in abundance

What is your advice to individuals out there wanting to start their own businesses but are too scared?

If the benefits outweigh the risks, commit to it and go for it. Dream big!

Tell us 2 things that are the BEST part about owning your own business and make it all worth while?

Being my own boss gives me creative freedom!

Being able to give the women who work for me the means to help support a family. This is very rewarding.

How has lock down affected you and your team?

Unfortunately it has meant low stock and loss of sales. Lock down has been very hard on small businesses.
