So as you all know I love to support local and started a segment where we could share, learn and inspire!

During lock down, we are going to do a whole lot of these to highlight these businesses – many of which are taking HUGE strain during this time – and shed some awareness and love to all.

So I would love to introduce you to an awesome proudly South African business, Raw Co! We chatted to Katherine and this is what she had to say. Their products are handmade, sustainable, eco-friendly and recycled – they are super authentic and have a range of products for you and you home.

You opened your own business  –  How does it feel to be a successful business owner that inspires others and loves what they do?

I love what I do and that lights me up/ excites me and I’m so grateful to be able to share it with others and even better that it inspires them

What are the top 3 learnings you have had to find out the hard way since starting your own business?

I’ve also learnt about how cheap imports have negatively affected the textile industry and how many people lost their jobs because of this.  It’s also hard for small businesses to find raw materials available in smaller quantities, – many businesses do not offer smaller runs / or lower Min. order quantities with regards to raw materials etc. unfortunately – which makes it that much harder.   In the beginning there is a lot of trial and error and there will always be somethings that do work and somethings that don’t

Where do you see your business in 5 years? Once we have gotten over the effects of the lock down.

I would love for RAW Co. to become a certified B Corp – which focuses on for profit businesses that aim to do good in the world. Check out more here!

What is your advice to individuals out there wanting to start their own businesses but are too scared?

I think its important to really get clear on your WHY, your brand and what you aim to achieve/ ultimate goal is at the end of the day.

Tell us 2 things that are the BEST part about owning your own business and make it all worth while?

Everyday is a new opportunity to get out what you put in and to make the most out of every day

And of course sharing/creating new products that excite me and hopefully our customers.

How has lock down affected you and your team?

We are a small family business, so we have taken the time to re-evaluate how we do things and to just enjoy the time together as a family.
