So as you all know I love to support local and started a segment where we could share, learn and inspire! It is so important to support local and share your findings with others. During lock down, we are going to do a whole lot of these to highlight these businesses – many of which are taking HUGE strain during this time – and shed some awareness and love to all.

Today I would love to share our new favourite coffee spot with those of you that live in the Joburg area. We had the pleasure of going though to Roast Republic for a chat with Nic, co-founder of Roast Republic and was so divine to find out more about this proudly local business.  Times have been hard for small businesses and I urge you to support your local spots more than ever – this gem included.

Please check out their website to learn more about this special local business and brand. And please give them a follow on Instagram and Facebook – they would appreciate the love and support. Not only do they sell coffees and drinks, but they do breakfast bowls,  salads and sandwiches too (and if you don’t want to leave the house – you can order through Ubereats too), as well as divine pastries and other local goodies available on shelf to take home and enjoy.

They have their Bryanston brick and mortar store in Sloan Square Shopping centre and then the cutest yellow Mini that can be found in Fourways Garden’s over a weekend selling coffee! Having an event and keen for a coffee vendor? Look no further! This little yellow Mini will be the star of the show at any event or get them to come to your office – all Covid protocols are followed to a T.

We chatted to Nic and he told us all about their business and brand! Him and his co-founder Jaco, are passionate about coffee and giving back to the community. Let’s see what we learnt!

Tell us the story behind Roast Republic.

ROAST REPUBLIC WAS STARTED WITH A VERY SIMPLE IDEA: TO MAKE A SUSTAINABLE DIFFERENCE THROUGH OUR LOVE FOR COFFEE AND PEOPLE.

WE HAVE DONE THIS THROUGH OUTRIGHT FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO CHARITIES FROM THE COFFEE WE ROASTED, BUT NOW FOCUS ON TRAINING FIRST TIME UNEMPLOYED YOUTH AND ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT.

Tell us about your coffee and beans?

Our coffee blend has been specifically chosen for maximum flavour and to ensure that our customers enjoy a surprisingly delightful cup with every brew, however they choose to brew their coffee. We sell an amazing blend in various sizes (250g and 1kg), as either ground coffee or whole beans (normal or decaf).

Our current blend is made up of beans form Tanzania, Guatemala and Brazil. We’ve roasted it to a medium roast, to maximise the flavours of each individual bean. In the cup, you should expect a medium to full body with a polite citric acidity, fruity notes with a dark chocolate finish.

The Manifesto of the Roast Re:public United we stand as a people; determined to reject the status quo of mediocre coffee and selfish living. Lifting our cups to the future of a democracy where there is equal access to quality coffee and education for all. The Re:public seeks to propagate a magna carta of “coffee with a conscience.” A revolution, if you will, where the precious commodity of coffee is utilized to facilitate a sustainable value exchange between different communities: exchanging the love of quality coffee for the availability of quality education.

So this truly is an incredible local brand and one to support. Covid has been a massive thorn in their side and affected them badly. Covid has stopped them being able to do everything they wanted to donations and charity wise but they have been able to support their staff, hire back as many of them as they could or place them elsewhere and provide food parcels to their staff to assist. They also have their staff drive in together in a company bakkie so as not to have them in taxis where they may come into contact with Covid.

Their coffee is fantastic, and they are such a special business, with their aim to help the less fortunate – lets help and support them in their endevours during this time. Once you taste their coffee… you won’t want to go anywhere else!
