So as you all know I love to support local and started a #girlboss segment on the blog where we could share insights and stories, learn and inspire! And most importantly, SUPPORT each other.

During lock down, we are going to do a whole lot of these to highlight these businesses – many of which are taking HUGE strain during this time – and shed some awareness and love to all.

So I want to introduce you to Shannon that does the most gorgeous illustrations – of your families, friends, pets – you name it, Shannon can bring it to life. So creative and talented, I’m blown away!

So let’s see what our #girlboss had to say when faced with some questions:

You started your own illustration business – How does it feel to be a successful #girlboss that inspires others and loves what she does?

It feels great to be doing something that I love and enjoy! It took me a while in life to find something that I’m truly happy doing, I have always loved art and creating but never really thought of turning it into a business until recently, I’m glad I did though – it’s really special to be able to create something for someone else, to make something that will become a part of their homes and their lives. I have never really thought of myself as inspiring, but thank you! I think everyone has been blessed with their own unique talents and gifts, we should all make time to explore them and find the things in life that bring us joy.

What are the top 3 learnings you have had to find out the hard way since starting your own business?

I think I have been really blessed so far, I haven’t had any real issues at all and I’m really lucky to have worked with amazing clients thus far and for that I am truly grateful.

Where do you see your businesses in 5 years? Once we have gotten over the effects of the lock down.

I would love to still be doing my illustrations but perhaps broaden out a bit as well, maybe working on things like business cards, personalized books or wedding favours – the sky’s the limit really when it comes to illustration art, so I’ll get back to you in 5 years time and let you know where I’m at😂

What is your advice to women out there wanting to start their own businesses but are too scared?

Go for it! At the beginning of this year I had no idea I would be starting a business. It was suggested to me a few times by friends and family but I never really put any real thought into it. Halfway through January I thought, what the heck – why not, and just like that it started. I will always encourage people to do something that they love and find fulfilling, we all fear failure but regretting not taking an opportunity to do something you love is worse than possible failure. Take the chance and see where it goes, start small and go from there – hardwork will always pay off.

Tell us 2 things that are the BEST part about owning your own business and make it all worth while?

The best part about owning your own business is the freedom to make your own decisions, to have a vision for something and know that it is up to you whether it works or not. I feel privileged to make something that will become a part of someone’s home, or something that will be given as a gift to a loved one, whenever a client receives one and let’s me know that they love it – that’s what makes it all worthwhile.

What is the coolest commissioned piece you have worked on recently?

I recently did a pregnancy announcement for my best friend, it was really special to be able to make her something that she could keep forever to remember the occasion. I hope to do more for other expecting moms as I think it’s a unique way to make the announcement or do a gender reveal.
