I love a good market, but find they have to tick certain boxes – parking, loads of food options and beautiful items for sale – no Chinese imports. The Irene Village Market ticks these and exceeds! It is my top market to visit in Gauteng. But keep an eye on their calendar to ensure you don’t come through and they are not open – they are open the 1st and last Saturday of each moth but more frequently over November/December for Christmas shopping.

The Irene market is well known in Johannesburg for its arty market, where you can find all things arty and crafty and the most divine home made food and goodies. People drive in from Pretoria and Joburg and then you have those lucky enough to live in Irene! They recently moved premises so make sure you check the address and don’t land up at the old market venue like we did!

There is a wide range of food available and seating areas for everyone to sit, eat and chat. There is also live music which just creates the most divine vibe. Arrive in the morning (starts at 9am), stay till the afternoon.

The stalls are numerous and all selling completely different things. You will not leave without finding a few items that you cant live without. Be it from the antique section, the plant section, the food section or the arts and crafts. From gorgeous leather goods, to ceramics and toys, to clothing and furniture, this market, with over 250 stalls is a shopping adventure. We never leave without buying packets of fudge (it alone is worth the drive I promise!).

Bring the kids, it’s a lovely day out for the whole family including your dogs. Dogs on leads entertain themselves as they sniff and smell and exchange friendly barks at passer bys.

Come early if you are planning on buying homemade muffins and cakes to pass off as your own at your lunch or dinner do. As they say, you snooze, you lose and you don’t want to lose out of any of this! The food is all fresh and homemade – what’s not to love?!

Check the website for more info, and connect on Facebook to be kept in the loop of any upcoming events. Don’t forget to bring your R10 for parking.
