So as you all know I love to support local and started a segment where we could share, learn and inspire! It is so important to support local and share your findings with others.

During lock down, we are going to do a whole lot of these to highlight these businesses – many of which are taking HUGE strain during this time – and shed some awareness and love to all.

Today I am sharing an awesome luxury homeware brand with you! These items are locally made with passion and are truly South African! Smyth by Lo-Ki pride themselves on their quality products and you will love them. I am personally in love with their cushion covers – they are so gorgeous! But so are their tea towels, aprons, table cloths, napkins, baskets, utility baskets – the list goes on and on!

Check out their website here to shop online!

And follow them on Instagram and Facebook – they would appreciate the love.

We chatted to this awesome brand and they had this to say to us!

Tell us a little bit about your business.

Smyth by Lo-Ki is a luxury homeware range, that was started by 2 life-long friends as a passion project and creative outlet. We locally design, print & manufacture our homeware items. Carmen has a background that enables her to run production and back end. Kirsten, as a JHB based Interior Designer, has an eye for all things pretty, as well as the patience to hand pour our gorgeous candles- which allows us to ensure our clients get a beautiful product made with quality ingredients.

What are the top 3 learnings you have had to find out the hard way since starting your own business? Everything takes longer than you think.

Everything costs more than you think.
Not everyone has the same work ethic or values as you have- so develop a sense of patience and a sense of humour- fast.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?

We would like to have expanded our range significantly and have a stand alone store stocking locally manufactured items from our own range, as well as other talented designers from across the Continent.

What is your advice to individuals out there wanting to start their own businesses but are too scared?

Just go for it! Having your own business is not nearly as glamorous as you think, so if you are resilient and hard working- just go for it. we wouldn’t say its fake it until you make it- but it is a matter of- start, and you can figure the rest out along the way. Starting out- keep it small, you do not need to have all your ducks in a row, you can align them as you go along- with the help of friends and google and a few bumps and bruises- you will figure it out. But just start- somewhere.

Tell us 2 things that are the BEST part about owning your own business and make it all worth while?

Getting feedback from clients who enjoy your products and doing things on your own time- whether it is deliverables or taking the morning off to have a coffee with a friend- you are only accountable to your own businesses growth, instead of helping someone else build their dream.

How has lock down affected you and your business?

Lockdown did have an effect on us- as shows that we were supposed to participate in where cancelled, however, these platforms have been quick to act and dynamic in their approach- moving online almost immediately. We have just had to be understanding that everyone has gone through a nervous few months of conserving funds where they can, not spending on luxury goods- but we are happy to see, slowly things are coming right and things are looking up.
