So as you all know I love to support local and started a segment where we could share, learn and inspire! It is so important to support local and share your findings with others.

During lock down, we are going to do a whole lot of these to highlight these businesses – many of which are taking HUGE strain during this time – and shed some awareness and love to all.

I want to share with you a very special little business called The Adaptable Bee.

What do they sell? DIY beeswax food wrap kits (so you can make your very own wrap to use at home instead of clingwrap!), DIY beeswax candle making kits, or ready made beeswax food wraps (which are reusable which is great for the environment ).

Please check out their website to learn more and for online sales! They would also appreciate some social media love so please follow them on Facebook and Instagram!

We chatted to the lovely Darren Colquhoun, Founder of The Adaptable Bee.

Tell us a little bit about your business.

The Adaptable Bee is a small home based, eco-friendly business situated between Barrydale and Ladismith in the Klein Karoo. I started the business in 2019, as a wheelchair user and hobbyist beekeeper to sell my DIY beeswax kits, to help make a better life for myself and little family.

We are the first in South Africa to bring you this fabulous concept. Going zero waste does not mean give up your luxuries. Our beeswax blend is fantastic to make your own homemade wraps as an alternative to cling film and is a naturally antibacterial, reusable and compostable when they finally reach their end of life.

How does it feel to be a business owner that loves what they do?

As a new business owner I love the freedom working my own hours, and the freedom to experiment with new ideas, and choose which ones to keep and which I can happily throw away.

We are on a mission to reduce the amount of plastic waste in our home and hopefully encourage more people to take care of the environment.

What are the top 3 learnings you have had to find out the hard way since starting your own business?

I realized how complex financial and bookkepping can be and with little assistance and finance it can be very daunting.

Product pricing is one of the most critical and important business decisions you will make and I still struggle with today.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?

I would like to be the leader in my business field in SA with DIY Beeswax Food and Candle Kits with supplies and workshops around the country.

What is your advice to individuals out there wanting to start their own businesses but are too scared?

Do lots of research and become an expert in and on your product. Set yourself small goals to achieve as you move forward and don’t give up in your first year of business as this is the hardest and learning time.

Tell us 2 things that are the BEST part about owning your own business and make it all worthwhile?

The best 2 things about owning my own business is making sales and positive customer feedback

How has lock down affected you?

The lock down has not really affected my business due to being a one man, online business, except for delays with couriers due to backlogs of packages.
