So as you all know I love to support local and started a segment where we could share, learn and inspire! It is so important to support local and share your findings with others.
During lock down, we are going to do a whole lot of these to highlight these businesses – many of which are taking HUGE strain during this time – and shed some awareness and love to all.
Was so excited when I came across this little business and knew I had to share! The Sister Co. is a proudly local business that sells handmade scrunchies and hair scarves and local inspired tees, as well as earrings, necklaces and hair clips! All the things we need, in one place. They have a wonderful range of items – something for everyone.
We chatted to The Sister Co and they had this to say!
You opened your own business – How does it feel to be a successful business owner that inspires others and loves what they do?
It has always been a dream for both of us to be business owners & it always felt like it would be something that would only happen “one day” or “when I’m older” so to actually be doing what we’ve always dreamt of doing is sometimes still very surreal.
What are the top 3 learnings you have had to find out the hard way since starting your own business?
Not everyone will support or encourage you or be onboard with you starting your own business & will give you a list of reasons why it’s risky or could fail.
Listen, but don’t allow them to discourage you.
It’s hard work! A lot of late nights & sacrifices, especially if you make the products yourself.
Don’t expect to derive an income from your business in the beginning. You need to put a lot into starting – you need to spend money to make money. There are a lot of unexpected expenses & some months may not be as successful as previous months.
Where do you see your business in 5 years? Once we have gotten over the effects of the lock down.
Our dream is to grow The Sister Co. into a bigger lifestyle brand that really is for every kind of woman. The idea is to offer products that really inspire women & make them feel loved & beautiful.
What is your advice to individuals out there wanting to start their own businesses but are too scared?
Just do it! It’s never going to be the right time & you are never going to really be ready. Just start!
Celebrate the small wins! Don’t worry if it starts off small or slow. If you are really passionate about your product/ what you do – we believe it will be a success. It is hard work but it’s so worth it!
Tell us 2 things that are the BEST part about owning your own business and make it all worth while?
Receiving feedback & reviews from customers who love their purchase & appreciate all the hard work that goes into it.
Seeing people wear your products is
a total highlight for us.
Working with your sister everyday! There is no better colleague/ partner.
How has lock down affected you and your team?
We don’t get to have daily interactions or face to face conversations like before so we rely a lot on technology.
We have managed to navigate through the difficulties but the biggest effect has been on our interactions with our customers at markets/ open houses/ with deliveries etc.
You just want to be able to connect with your customer but sadly lockdown means everything is done from a distance.
