So as you all know I love to support local and started a segment where we could share, learn and inspire! It is so important to support local and share your findings with others.
During lock down, we are going to do a whole lot of these to highlight these businesses – many of which are taking HUGE strain during this time – and shed some awareness and love to all.
I discovered TLC through Instagram and fell in love with Taryn’s beautiful Macramé products she makes – from coasters, to earrings to wall hangings and plant hangers.
They are very much en trend at the moment and would look magnificent in any home.
My favourite is the air plant holder as I never know how to display my air plants!
We chatted to the talented Taryn and she had this to say about her business!
You opened your own business – How does it feel to be a successful business owner that inspires others and loves what they do?
I have always enjoyed creating decorative items for myself.
After learning some Macramé knots online, it really got the creative juices flowing and the rest is history.
I love making wall hangings and plant hangers and seeing them in my customer’s homes.
I started this business about 7 months ago and I’m so fortunate that Macramé is very much on trend at the moment so this has helped my business grow.
What are the top 3 learnings you have had to find out the hard way since starting your own business?
1. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication. The more you put into your business the more you get out.
2. Macramé materials are not readily available. Much of the Macramé cord that is on trend at the moment is not available in South Africa. So I have to source it from overseas, which is difficult and pricey.
3. Don’t doubt yourself. You might feel when you see what others create that yours isn’t good enough. But that is not how your customers feel. So when you get great feedback from customers you realise you shouldn’t doubt yourself.
Where do you see your business in 5 years? Once we have gotten over the effects of the lock down.
I plan on having a website to sell my products and be able to become a supplier of the Macramé cord which isn’t available in South Africa.
And of course to grow and supply shops with my products
What is your advice to individuals out there wanting to start their own businesses but are too scared?
Just do it! If you find something you love doing and others like it too then jump right in.
Don’t get discouraged when you feel like you are not selling what you expected, just keep going.
I started with Instagram and found it beneficial to advertise my products which gave me more followers which then generated into more orders.
Tell us 2 things that are the BEST part about owning your own business and make it all worthwhile?
Having a flexible work schedule is important for me. And being able to work from home.
How has lock down affected you?
It has affected me in that at the beginning of the lockdown couriers were running for essential services only so it was difficult to get orders out.
Also getting my materials to finish orders, has been trying because of huge delays in deliveries.
So being patient has been the key.
