So as you all know I love to support local! During lock down, we are going to do a whole lot of these to highlight these businesses – many of which are taking HUGE strain during this time – and shed some awareness and love to all!

So I discovered the most beautiful prints  of animals lying on couches last year and ever since have kicked myself for not buying them. Fast forward to seeing an announcement a few days ago from Pay Just Now that Whimsical Collection was one of their stores where you can buy products and pay three installments over 3 months – BUT you get the products straight away. How cool is that?

ANYWAY I digress, the exciting part was that now I know who is behind those prints, I can share with you! And I then saw that its not only prints, but magnets, stretched canvas prints, bags, pouches, handbags, cards, cushions etc – a whole range of gorgeous proudly South African items!

So I reached out to Deziree to tell us a little bit about herself and the business, and this is what she had to say!

You opened your own business – How does it feel to be a successful business owner that inspires others and loves what they do?

I still can’t believe what we have achieved… it may have started with me but I must admit, without my team we would not have gotten this far.

‘Always look at the bright side of life’

I did not realise the impact my humorous work would have in the industry. I feel honoured that my work has inspired more artist to focus on wildlife.

It is without a doubt the best job to have and I am surely blessed.

What are the top 3 learnings you have had to find out the hard way since starting your own business?

How to build a brand. Creating a whole new brand was testing.

Investing in a new range that was not tested in the market place first cost us some set backs.

Finding the right staff members takes time.

Where do you see your business in 5 years? Once we have gotten over the effects of the lock down.

We have started a working good relationship with USA and Germany for exporting. I hope to see us extending to an international market in the next few years.

I would also love to see a Whimsical Collection shop at the airport, that would be fun!

What is your advice to individuals out there wanting to start their own businesses but are too scared?

I started this company with the last few Rands in my credit card… don’t wait until you are desperate. If you know you have what it takes, go for it. And always work hard!

Tell us 2 things that are the BEST part about owning your own business and make it all worth while?

I paint and work remotely from my studio at home.

This company has helped and empowered many people as well as baby Rhinos. We donate regularly to The Rhino Orphanage in Limpopo!

How has lock down affected you and your team?

Personally I’ve had more challenges than expected as I have two young boys at home. I’ve had to set my career aside and tend to their needs in these uncertain times we find ourselves in.

The Whimsical team has proven themselves worthy and I could not be more proud. We have created face-masks that has kept us going and secured all our employees with an income.
